The Art of Jonathon Earl Bowser

July 24, 1999
The image that was displayed on the previous opening page of Masters Digital Design was painted by Jonathon Earl Bowser.  It's called 'The Angel of Capricorn' and was released in the spring of 2001 as a limited edition lithograph.  View  ANGEL OF CAPRICORN.

The Gallery of Goddess Art is not just a visual site.   Below several of the paintings are the writings of Jonathon Earl Bowser, encompassing such subjects as Greek mythology and his views on topics relating to the pictures.  An essay explains what Mythic Naturalism is.  There are over 130 works of art done in charcoal, pastels, watercolors and oils.   Most of his works are available as lithographs or digital prints, while others can only be viewed on the site.   Some of the originals in oils and watercolors can still be purchased.   If you go through the whole site, and follow the links, you will get an inside look at the process this artist uses to create his paintings.  There are 8 distinct divisions within the site:

1.  MYTHIC NATURALISM
Mythic Naturalism  is divided into  2 sections.  The first contains paintings from 1992 to 1996 with a small selection of poetry inspired by Jonathon's art, written by Ingvild Gregersen.  The second part to Mythic Naturalism is a work in progress with only 5 completed paintings.  Some links marked 'coming soon' lead to charcoal sketches of new pieces as they develop.  Each page of finished paintings has an additional link that takes you to close up of sections of the paintings.  All of the works in Mythic Naturalism are oils.

2.  BOUDOIR
The boudoir collection was created from 1988 up to 1993 and consists mainly of images done in pastels and watercolors, with one charcoal sketch.

3.  GOLDEN BIRD
This section is made up oil paintings done from 1990 through to 1992.  Most of the originals can still be obtained.  It has 2 poems by Ingvild Gregersen and one by Michael Coffey.  All are available as digital prints.

4.  BRADFORD
The Bradford Exchange has published and distributed Jonathon's paintings world-wide in the form of collector's plates.  The four paintings are shown here, in their original format. A fifth one was commissioned, 'Musicians In Paradise', but was never released.  It is displayed in the second link to Mythic Naturalism.  These 5 paintings all have a unique feature - images are embedded within the scenery.  You need to look closely to see all the figures emerging from the background.

5.  EARLY WORK
These pages display Jonathon's work from 1986 up to 1994, in watercolors, pastels, and oil.

6.  LANDSCAPES
The largest section of this site, it has 5 sub-divisions, each containing 12 paintings created from 1988 through to 1998.  Titled The Canadian Rockies, it features paintings of scenery from western Canada and the U.S.  -  Banff National Park, Kananaskis Provincial Park, Jasper National Park, Waterton National Park, Dinosaur Provincial Park (Alberta),  Yoho National Park, Mount Robson Provincial Park, Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park, Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park (British Columbia), Yosemite National Park (California), Glacier National Park (Montana), as well as the surrounding areas in southern Alberta.  The attention to detail in these landscapes makes the paintings appear almost like photographs.  You feel you can touch the leaves of The Cedar Forest, in Landscapes III.

7.  SKETCHBOOK
This area holds 12 sketches done during the period 1988 to 1992.  None are for sale, and can be viewed only on his site.

8.  BIOGRAPHY
The biography page has links to Frequently Asked Questions, photos of Jonathon, a listing of his exhibitions and publications, along with an essay about Mythical Naturalism.  In Jonathon's own words, "There is no shortage of people willing to expound on all that's wrong with the world; I just want to remind people - and myself too - that the universe is also an infinitely beautiful, fundamentally inexplicable place.  For me, that Beauty and Mystery, that Grace and Invitation into Discovery, is exemplified in Her image."
