UPDATED:  December 31, 2007 - WILD AFRICA ART WEB SITE IS NOW CLOSED.

No ... that is not a photograph to the left.  It is one of the paintings from the book, "Wildlife Portraits".  And Wild Africa Art is the web site owned by eminent British artist, Don Heywood, a graduate of the Leicester College of Art and the London College of Printing.  Celebrated for his series of South Africans in traditional dress, published in 1994 under the title “The Vanishing Faces of Southern Africa”, he is also noted for his spectacular oil paintings and pencil sketches of African wildlife.  An avid conservationist, Mr. Heywood is a patron of the Endangered Wildlife Trust, a founding member of the Peace Parks Foundation, and a sponsor of the Cheetah Conservation Fund.  He is the artist behind the Cheetah Outreach “Shadow” line of T-shirts, for which he donated his artwork.
There are two galleries on the site - Wildlife and Vanishing Faces - housing over 60 images.  From the leopard, gently lapping at the edge of a river, to the elephants thundering across the African plain, to the cheetah cub poking a tiny paw between the branches of a tree, the breathtaking portraits of these wild creatures will leave you wishing you could view the original works right in front of you.  All can be purchased as Giclee prints.  E-cards, using these images, are also available, free of charge, from the site.

There are some problems with the design of the site, but they are small and should not hinder you're enjoyment of the art within the pages.  Use Internet Explorer  - with Netscape, the functionality of the button to enlarge the pictures is absent.  With anything less than Netscape 6, major parts of the site are missing altogether.  And while there is a link on the Conservation page to the widely acclaimed limited-edition Smithsonian Endangered Species Collection, it is not active.  The collection, comprised of 12 works, includes the giant panda, Eld's deer, Przewalski's horse, cheetah, scimitar-homed oryx, black-footed ferret, maned wolf, Micronesian kingfisher, clouded leopard, l'iwi/Amakihi (Hawaiian forest birds), Bengal tiger, and African wild dog.

"Professionally and spiritually, the people and animals of the world's wilderness have made a profound impact on my life.  Now they need our help and I am truly fortunate to be able to use my talents to do that in some small measure." - Don Heywood

Don Heywood’s works have been exhibited at many galleries, including the Royal Academy, London, and Le Grand Palais Champs Elysees, Paris.   Through the wonders of the internet, you too, can partake of these extraordinary collections depicting the wilds of Africa by clicking on the image at the top of this page.

February 2005 Update:  The Wild Africa Art web site appears to be no longer on line.  In its place, this page now links to Don Heywood's personal site.
