| My
name is Bev and I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I'm currently employed
within the financial industry, but that's not my chosen profession.
My first love is music. I used to play the piano, but that hobby
has fallen by the wayside. I'm a recording engineer, having obtained
certification in 1980 and I hold an electronics technology degree.
I spent several years on the road with various music groups. I've
been married for 35 years to a musician and we have a son and a daughter,
both grown now. You may recognize my husband, VANCE,
from his days with The Guess Who. Our son, Vance Jr., has chosen
the music industry, too -- he's the Director of Entertainment Technologies
with a chain of hotels and a DJ at one of the local nightclubs. Our
daughter, Krista, was employed in the television cable industry, for some
time but, like me, has now moved into the financial sector. She is
the talented web master behind one of the most successful 80’s sites on
the ‘net today - KRISTA'S
KORNER.
As stated in the history,
this whole site came about by accident, only 2 months after getting my
first computer. And they were extremely trying months while I attempted
to learn the basics. If it was possible for something to go wrong,
it did. And I had no idea how to fix it. I virtually lived
on the computer, searching web sites like ZDNet and Microsoft, trying to
find answers to questions that I didn't really know how to ask. I
felt I was beginning to develop a 'relationship' with some of the tech
support people. I spent more time talking to them than I did my friends.
But eventually I got through it, and things started to make sense.
Five years later, I have small network of computers, a web design firm,
and have even salvaged some ‘prehistoric’ computers, turning them into
working units. None of this would ever have come about had the first
computer I bought worked properly from the start. It was not some
low-end, budget unit, either - it was a state-of-the-art machine that still
serves me well today for site testing purposes. Ultimately, it turned
out to be an incorrect bios setting done by the tech at the store when
the system was built. But in the beginning, like most people, I assumed
that I must have been doing something wrong. And because of that,
it sent me on a quest to determine what my inexperience had done to foul
up the computer so badly. What I have learned has provided me with
an insatiable curiosity on all things related to the IT field as the more
knowledge I acquire, the more I realize I still have to discover.
I would someday like to make this more than a hobby.
It may seem odd to you that
this late in life someone would even consider such a drastic career change.
In 1996, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and truly thought my life was
over. Fortunately, I survived, after chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation
treatments with the help of my husband, who gave up his career for 2 years
to look after me. The initial prognosis was not good, but I believe
that you can help yourself to heal. Half the battle is in your mind.
Not all though, because without proper medical attention, all the wishful
thinking in the world won't do any good. Because of that experience,
I no longer put off things that I want to do. There may not be the
tomorrow that we all take for granted. Never mind a life threatening
illness, what's to say you won't walk out your door and be hit by a truck?
In my late teens and early twenties, I was a model and used to hate the
thought of getting older. You know what? The alternative is
a lot worse.
