A complete re-design of
the site was long overdue. Much of the original content had been
removed well over a year ago and when preparing the new pages, I hesitated
as to whether or not I would bring back the personal information that had
been so much a part of the previous pages. The world events during
the past 18 months, coupled with the dramatic shift on the Internet towards
e-commerce, made it appear as though no one really had the time anymore
to just “look around” at what was out there. The Internet has become
merely another tool in our day-to-day lives. While demands on our
time are squeezing out the ever-decreasing recreational hours to almost
the point of non-existence, it would certainly be nice if we could recover
some of that initial exuberance that imbued those first few years of the
World Wide Web with such optimism. There are many old maxims that
seem to indicate it's regrettable to attempt a return to the past. Sayings
such as "You can't go home again,” and "Don't look back," immediately come
to mind. But I believe it's important to remember why this technology
came into existence in the first place -- it was all about the open sharing
of information and knowledge. And so the personal side has returned
to this site. It's going to take a while to restore all those old
pages ... |

The
first three pages relating to the Internet have been re-instated.
The Internet Index, which is accessible only through the Site Map, currently
holds articles on email harvesting spiders, virus information, and a bit
about copyrights. |

The
best of intentions ... it's taken 5 months for me to get some spare time
to start reloading the graphic sets from the old pages. There just
never seems to be enough time to work on my own pages. The BUTTON
SETS are finally back, as are the original
TUBE
PAINTINGS and FIRST
IMAGES. |

After
much deliberation, I've put the AWARDS
PAGES up. Initially, I wasn't going
to bring them back as so many of the sites are no longer on-line.
But then, the personal side of the site seems to be turning into a nostalgia
thing anyhow. Seems odd, considering that all this took place less
than 5 years ago. The WEB
PAGE ARCHIVE holds some of the pages from
the past. And the TREASURED
GIFTS pages contain the souvenirs and mementos
from the many people I've become acquainted with over the years. |

Have
you noticed lately that the domains of some of your favourite web sites
have been bought up by businesses? These domain names were once the
best part of the internet. Does it not seem as though they are essentially
stealing the good names of the previous owners, no matter what the rules
and regulations of domain name ownership stipulate? Is their product
(and 99% of the time these underhanded characters are selling something)
so inferior that it won't, on its own, generate enough traffic to their
site? Must they rely on visitors who are looking for something entirely
different? Examples (and please don't purchase whatever they're offering
as that only perpetuates this nasty tactic):
-
williamsholler.com
used to be WILLIAMS
HOLLER, but is now an internet pharmacy.
Do you want to buy your medications from a company using underhanded marketing
tricks?
-
widowsweb.com
was the artistic expression of MARY
BROUSSARD. These poachers are selling
software - and one of their items is “Spy Software - Secretly record everything
they do on the internet with this Amazing Spying Software.” Deplorable,
given the fact that Mary hosted the Web Prestige program, the complete
antithesis of anything even remotely like this. And there are likely
millions of her buttons now linking to this impostor.
What's
wrong with this practice? They are taking advantage of the hundreds
of thousands of personal web sites that linked to the former owners of
these domain names because of the charm of those original sites.
Not all personal web masters go over their links each and every day to
ensure that they are still pointing to the original sites. It’s a
disgusting practice and I wish I had a way of stopping it. Maybe
the internet community should consider retiring a domain name if it's been
used already. And yes, these people are bandits - they are robbing
you and me of out time by dragging us into their ill-gotten pages, often
plunking cookies of which we want no part, onto our computers. Disreputable,
deceitful, possibly even fraudulent, are words that come to mind. |
