For my friend, Teresa ...
LEAVE
WELL ENOUGH ALONE. |
March 2008
Happy St. Patrick's Day
and Fad Saol Agat, which translates to “Long life to you.”
And Happy Easter, too.
Did you know this year is the earliest any of us will ever see the holiday
for the rest of our lives? It will be 220 years until Easter next
appears on March 23rd. And the last time it was this early was 1913.
Can't remember who sent this
cute little verse to me several years ago, so I apologize, in advance,
for not including the author's name.
ALL I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT
LIFE I LEARNED FROM THE EASTER BUNNY ...
Don't
put all of your eggs in one basket.
Walk softly and carry a
big carrot.
Everyone needs a friend
who is all ears.
There's no such thing as
too much candy.
All work and no play can
make you a basket case.
A cute little tail attracts
a lot of attention.
Everyone is entitled to
a bad hare day.
Let happy thoughts multiply
like rabbits.
Some body parts should be
floppy.
Keep your paws off other
people's jellybeans.
The grass is always greener
in someone else's basket.
An Easter bonnet can tame
even the wildest hare.
To show your true colors
you have to come out of your shell.
The best things in life
are still sweet and gooey |

There
are sunny days within us
And Springtime thoughts
to hold,
The gift of Summer memories
To warm the Winter's
cold.
There are cheerful times
within us
To cherish and to
store,
The laughter and the happiness
Are there for evermore.
There's a quiet place within
us,
A peace we can recall,
A treasure house of hope
and joy
Lies deep within
us all. |

My poor little Abbey is
not well. She has developed a tumour on her left hip and is scheduled
for surgery July 3rd. |
July 3, 2008
Abbey survived her surgery,
but this is going to be a long haul. I've set up a diary, of sorts,
detailing what this poor little hamster must endure. I'm so worried
about her, and this seems to be the only way to release some of that tension
while she sleeps. I will be eternally grateful to Dr. Konarzewski,
from the Transcona Veterinary Hospital, for doing his absolute best with
what limited surgical equipment is available for tiny rodents. He
fashioned a cone out of x-ray film to prevent her from chewing at the surgical
site, and modified the anaesthetic equipment to accommodate my little girl.
Her regular page is titled Abbey's Adventures - but this new one is more
appropriately named ABBEY'S
MISADVENTURE. |

Yesterday, Abbey managed
to remove her protective collar. Her regular veterinary clinic does
not open until 8:00 am, and if emergency care is required when closed,
pet caregivers are instructed to take the ailing animal to Pembina Veterinary
Hospital. It is the only emergency animal care open 24 hours in Winnipeg,
so you really don't have a choice. I had utilized their services
many years ago for my cat's regular health care, but had never needed their
emergency aid.
I was deeply disappointed
with the response I received when I called Pembina Veterinary Hospital
to see if I could bring Abbey in. The person answering the phone
said no one would be able to help me as there were other, "more important
cases" being tended to at that time and it would be several hours before
someone would even look at her. Wrong choice of words ... all animals
are important and to trivialize Abbey's existence in such a manner has
ensured I will relay this uncaring attitude to all who will listen. Why
is a hamster any less significant than a dog or a cat? |
August 16, 2008
Abbey's ordeal is over.
Her short time on this earth was not nearly enough for such a good-natured
little animal. Her life's story can be found HERE.
You will live on
in my heart, my little friend so true,
And memories of you will
fill my mind, until I go to you.
